Why DEmpower?
- Long-term view to investing
- Diligence and responsiveness
- Broad-based impact on a truly disadvantaged constituency of South Africa’s population
- Professionalism
- Good governance
Our Origins
Established in 2019, DEmpower was a ground-breaking value-preservation initiative and strategy of the Disability Empowerment Concerns Trust in response to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Commission’s challenge of DEC’s BEE credentials in 2018 and 2019. At least 47 persons with disabilities—majority Black and majority Black female—subscribed for shares on offer thus showcasing/leading the economic transformation agenda through direct, visible, measurable and meaningful economic participation by persons with disabilities in the country’s economic mainstream through BEE. This demonstrates a shift from indirect economic benefit of persons with disabilities through funded initiatives and programs only.
BEE Credentials
DEmpower Shareholders are people who contribute and/or had historically contributed in the Disability Sector, particularly in DEC and in the related National Non-Profit Organisations that provide services to and in the interests of the broader population of persons with disabilities in South Africa.
